Detection Dogs K9

Protecting Communities Through the Power of the Working Dog
Detection Dogs K9 was founded on a simple belief: every community deserves access to the tools necessary to keep its people safe, regardless of the size of its budget.
Highly trained detection and apprehension canines are among the most capable resources available to law enforcement and public-safety organizations. However, the cost of acquiring, training, equipping, and maintaining a qualified working canine can place these resources beyond the reach of smaller, underfunded, and economically disadvantaged communities.
We exist to help change that.
Our mission is to train and place highly capable detection and apprehension canine units into the hands of underprivileged and underfunded law-enforcement agencies and schools, giving communities access to a resource that might otherwise be financially out of reach.
What We Do
At Detection Dogs K9, we specialize in developing working dogs for specialized detection and apprehension roles.
Our detection dogs can be trained to identify a variety of target odors, including fentanyl, cannabis, methamphetamine, heroin, firearms, and electronic devices, among other applications. Depending on the needs of the receiving organization, a canine may be trained for a specific detection discipline or combination of disciplines.
Detection dogs can provide an extraordinary advantage to their handlers. Their highly developed sense of smell allows them to locate target odors that may be concealed from human detection, helping qualified personnel conduct searches more efficiently and effectively.
We also train canines for apprehension work, developing dogs capable of working alongside properly trained handlers in situations where a controlled canine response may be necessary.
Our objective is not simply to produce dogs that can perform a task.
Our objective is to create reliable canine handler teams.
Serving Communities That Need Us Most
A community's need for public safety does not become smaller because its tax base is smaller.
Rural departments, small municipalities, economically disadvantaged communities, and schools may face serious public-safety challenges while operating with a fraction of the resources available to larger organizations.
For these communities, the cost of a professionally trained working dog can be a significant obstacle.
Detection Dogs K9 seeks to bridge that gap.
Through charitable support and responsible placement, we work to make specialized canine resources more accessible to organizations that may otherwise be unable to obtain them.
We believe that public safety should not be reserved for communities with the largest budgets.
A child in a small rural school deserves to be protected just as much as a child in a wealthy district. An officer serving a small community deserves access to effective resources just as much as an officer serving a major metropolitan department.
The community may be different.
The budget may be different.
The right to safety is not.
The Working Dog
We recognize that a working canine is not simply a piece of equipment.
Every dog entrusted to a law-enforcement or school environment carries an enormous responsibility. Successful placement begins with selecting dogs with the appropriate health, temperament, drive, environmental stability, and working characteristics for the role they will be expected to perform.
Training requires patience, consistency, repetition, and an understanding of the individual dog.
We strive to develop dogs that are not only capable of performing their trained tasks, but capable of doing so reliably within the demanding environments in which working canines operate.
The welfare of the dogs entrusted to our program is equally important. A working dog must be properly cared for, appropriately trained, and placed into an environment suited to its abilities and temperament.
From Training to Partnership
Placing a canine is only the beginning.
A working dog is most effective when paired with a capable handler who understands how to communicate with, manage, maintain, and work alongside that dog.
For this reason, we view every placement as a partnership rather than simply the transfer of an animal.
Our ultimate goal is to help establish canine units that become dependable assets to the organizations they serve.
Whether a dog is assisting with a detection search, locating a target odor, searching for evidence, or supporting an apprehension operation, the effectiveness of the team depends upon the relationship between dog and handler.
The dog brings extraordinary ability. The handler brings direction. Together, they become a working unit.
Our Vision for Safer Communities
We envision a future in which the availability of specialized canine resources is not determined solely by an agency's financial circumstances.
We want to see qualified officers equipped with capable detection dogs.
We want to see schools and communities with additional resources available to support their safety.
We want smaller and underfunded agencies to have access to tools that can make a meaningful difference in the work they perform every day.
And we want to accomplish this while maintaining high standards for canine selection, training, placement, and welfare.
Our Mission Is Simple
Train capable dogs.
Equip dedicated handlers.
Support underfunded communities.
Help keep people safe.
Detection Dogs K9 exists because every community matters.
No matter how large the department.
No matter how small the town.
No matter how limited the budget.
Every community deserves the opportunity to be protected.
